Renovating Inner West homes with character
The Inner West is full of homes with stories: Victorian terraces in Newtown and Annandale, Federation cottages in Haberfield and Ashfield, workers' cottages in Marrickville and Rozelle, and Californian bungalows in Concord and Five Dock. They're beautiful houses, but their original kitchens and bathrooms were never designed for modern life.
Topline Kitchens & Bathrooms renovates kitchens, bathrooms, laundries and custom joinery throughout Sydney's Inner West. We love blending a modern, practical kitchen or bathroom with the character of an older home, so the new work feels like it belongs.
Terrace and cottage kitchens
Inner West kitchens are often narrow, sometimes sit in a lean to at the back of the house, and usually need to work harder than their size suggests. Good kitchen design here is all about planning:
- Galley and single wall layouts that keep walkways clear.
- Tall pantries and floor to ceiling storage to make the most of high ceilings.
- Skylights and good lighting to brighten long, deep rooms.
- Connection to the backyard through wide doors and a bench that flows outside.
We also often design custom joinery for the living spaces next to the kitchen, like bookshelves and window seats that suit period homes. See our custom joinery in Sydney and kitchen renovations in Sydney pages for more.
Bathrooms that suit older homes
Many Inner West homes still have one small bathroom, sometimes at the back of the house or combined with the laundry. Common projects include:
- Full bathroom renovations with new waterproofing, plumbing and tiling
- Moving the bathroom from the back of the house to a better spot inside
- Splitting a combined bathroom and laundry into two separate rooms
- Adding an ensuite or a powder room during a wider renovation
Classic finishes like gloss subway tiles, hexagon mosaics and traditional style tapware look great in period homes, while warm minimal bathrooms suit contemporary extensions. Have a look at our bathroom renovations in Sydney.
Heritage and access in the Inner West
- Heritage conservation areas cover large parts of the Inner West. Internal works are often exempt, but it's worth checking with Inner West Council before you start.
- Older structures. Timber floors, old plumbing and uneven walls are common. We assess these on site so there are no surprises in your quote.
- Lane access and parking. Many terraces have rear lane access, which makes deliveries easier. Where it doesn't, we plan skip bins and deliveries carefully.
